Norman Burnham White makes colourful, representational, accessible paintings in acrylic on canvas. see the catalogue of his original work, check out his Imprimo profile here.
Norman is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and has done two residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
His earlier work combined related texts with the images, forming a pixelated effect. Specific words were emphasized with colour while the remainder remained in the background. He found success with this work, participating in solo and group exhibitions. Some of this work found its way into corporate, institutional, and private collections.
At this time Norman was involved in several of Calgary's artist-run centres and studio collectives. Eventually, though, it became necessary to find another line of work. He had a lengthy career as a tour bus driver-guide, doing both the driving and narrating throughout the Rocky Mountains and out to the west coast, both in Canada and the northwest United States. The audience was different, but he was still helping people experience awe and wonder through line, form, and colour.
In 2018 Norman resumed his studio practice, starting off with paintings of bridges and other ubiquitous infrastructure we all depend on but don't really notice. Gone is the word screen: now it's more about light and colour.
He completed a commissioned work in 2019 and is open to doing more of them.
More recently Norman's work has derived from industrial settings. He continues to work and exhibit from his Calgary studio.
